Xenophobic attacks: Security operatives take over Delta Mall

The Delta Mall in Effurun, Uvwie council area of Delta state, housing Shoprite Super Store and other business concerns, has been shut down for the time being.

The shut down accompanied by heavy security presence within and around the mall are not unconnected with the recent attacks on South African business interests in major cities of Nigeria following xenophobic attacks on Nigerians living in South Africa.

Although skeletal services went on at the mall on Tuesday, especially at ShopRite, sources said stern- looking security agents, including soldiers and armed mobile policemen, were positioned around the premises on Wednesday, denying customers access.

However, employees of businesses located within the mall, who could identify themselves as such, were granted passage, only to go in to be briefed about the situation and be discharged from duty for the time being.

Some employees who spoke to The Nation in Warri, under anonymous conditions, said they were not sure of when they would return to work as they were only told to go back home for now.

An employee of one of the fun spots within the mall said: “The mall is closed for now. No shop is opened and we don’t know when we will resume back to work. They said they will call when the mall is reopening, so it may extend beyond tomorrow (Thursday)”.

In the same vein, offices of the telecommunications giant, MTN in Warri and Effurun, as at the time of filing this report, were partially opened though guarded by security men.

When contacted to comment on the presence of the police at the Delta Mall at Effurun, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, confirmed the situation.

The police image-maker said, “the security operatives took over the premises because there is a threat that they want to attack South African establishments here.”
